Maumelle Library and Addition

Location: Maumelle, Arkansas

Challenge: Design a visually appealing and cost-effective educational destination for this suburban community.

Performance: Precise solar orientation, daylighting for improved natural illumination and high insulation values yield annual energy costs among the lowest for any similar building in Arkansas.

Description: The Maumelle Public Library is designed to serve a midsized suburban community. The original facility and recent addition were both designed by Fennell Purifoy. The library offers a variety of functions, including a multipurpose meeting room, a reading room with vistas to the adjacent lake, a children’s area and a state-of-the-art computer catalog and online-access service. The building features a native Arkansas stone/limestone exterior and exposed, laminated wood trusses. The library incorporates many energy efficient measures, including effective solar orientation, using lake loop water heat pump system, daylighting and very high insulation values. The annual square foot cost for energy is among the lowest for any similar building in Arkansas. This project was honored with the American Institute of Architects Gulf States Region and Arkansas Chapter Awards. The project was also featured in the book “TIMBER CONSTRUCTION for Architects and Builders” by Eliot W. Goldstein, AIA published by McGraw-Hill Bookstore.
